Incident Overview

On the 20th October 2020, in the early , hours of the morning the Panamanian flagged oil tanker, 'Admiral Codrington, managed by SWT (South West Tankers) collided with a small coastal tanker whist transiting through the Bosporus and subsequently ran aground.

As a result of the collision, two crew members from the Admiral Codrington are believed to have fallen overboard, whilst one other crew member sustaining head injuries.

Search and rescue efforts were quickly underway and Tug boats were at the scene shortly after to try an refloat the vessel. However, due poor weather conditions the refloating operation was brought to a halt for 24 hours. During this time the vessel's ballast tank suffered a rupture, causing the vessel to slowly capsize.


When tugs were able to return to the scene a large quantity of oil was observed to be surrounding the Admiral Codrington.

Statement 3 - 23rd October 2020

South West Tankers regret to report, that following 48 hours of searching for the two missing crew members, the body of the much-valued Deck Cadet of Filipino nationality was tragically discovered in the early hours of this morning.

 

Whilst the search for the remaining crew member has so far been unsuccessful, we remain hopeful that he will be recovered.

As a result of unforeseen and dangerous weather conditions, the re-floating of the ‘Admiral Codrington’ was suspended late last night. As a result of the heavy weather, the vessel has reportedly suffered a rupture to the ballast tank, affecting the stability of the vessel. As such, the vessel is now at risk of capsizing.

 A large quantity of oil is now reportedly surrounding the vessel and is confirmed to be coming from Admiral Codrington.

Statement 2 - 21st October 2020

Despite 24 hours of searching for the two crew members who were believed to have gone overboard as a result of the collision, the search and rescue efforts have unfortunately been unsuccessful.

One crew member who sustained head injuries following the collision was immediately flown airlifted to the hospital to receive medical treatment. It is reported that he is in a stable condition and is due to make a full recovery.

Whilst the vessel remains grounded in the strait, tugboats are on scene to trying their utmost to re-float the vessel.

A small quantity of oil sheen was also observed on the surface of the water, however, it is not yet known whether the oil has come from the ‘Admiral Codrington’ or the small coastal tanker.


A full investigation into the cause of the incident is now underway and all further information will be provided as soon as it becomes available.

South West Tankers, managers of the Panamanian flagged oil tanker, 'Admiral Codrington' regret to report that while transiting through the Bosphorus strait, the vessel collided with another tanker, and subsequently ran aground. Following the collision, two crew members are believed to have gone overboard from the ‘Admiral Codrington’, with injuries to some of the other crew onboard also being reported.

A full search and rescue operation is now underway to find the missing crew, with those whose sustained injuries receiving all necessary medical attention.


There are currently no reports of pollution.

How did the collision happen in the first place?

Unfortunately, the cause of the collision is not yet known, however a full investigation alongside local authorities is now underway to determine the details leading up to the incident. 

How much longer will it be until the body of the other missing seafarer is recovered?

We are unable to provide an accurate time frame of when the missing seafarer will be found. However, search and rescue efforts are ongoing and remain to be our top priority. 

Will there be compensation for the damage caused to environment

South West Tankers have the utmost care and respect for the environment. We recognize our responsibility to help protect and preserve the planet and are strongly committed to minimizing any impact our operations have on the environment. We also standby and support those who are working to improve global environmental sustainability. 

Whilst we are deeply concerned by the damaged caused to the local environment as a result the incident. It is imperative that a full investigation into the incident is completed before we can commit to any further action.

Our top priorities, along with local authorities, remain to be; continuing the search effort for our much valued seafarer who remains missing. As well, as containing the spill and minimizing any further environmental damage.
